Groupon history

In 2007, Andrew Mason helped found The Point, a tipping-point-based collective action website dedicated to getting people together to accomplish a goal. The following year, The Point gave birth to Groupon, a site dedicated to advertising local businesses by offering deals for a limited time.

The world’s first Groupon was a deal for Motel Bar, located just downstairs from the Groupon office in Chicago, Illinois. After that first deal, businesses across the city caught on. Groupon ran deals for increasingly larger businesses, such as the Art Institute of Chicago, but maintained the absurd sense of humor that helped to garner attention from its very first customers. Eventually, Groupon began to expand to other cities.

Days and deals came and went, and word spread. A feature on the Today Show kept the momentum going. By the end of 2009, Groupon had spread to 28 U.S. cities. The following spring, it reached all the way to international markets including Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Belgium.
