Those two firms had begun supplying electric service in the 1880s. In the time of this merger, the firm had 105,000 clients. Back in 1937, IPL started a rural electrification program, conducting power lines to a lot of regions outside Marion County.
The business moved to its present-day headquarters building on Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis at 1935; the construction, now called the Electric Building, was assembled in 1924 for its Continental Bank.
From the late 1980s that the Internal Revenue Service audited IPL and assessed a tax deficiency on deposits which IPL required of clients with poor credit histories. The ensuing court case, Commissioner v. Indianapolis Power & Light Co., led to a United States Supreme Court judgment in 1990 that these client deposits into a public utility weren’t taxable income.
In 2008 Indianapolis Power and Light AES incorporated the world’s first grid lithium ion ion battery energy storage system using four megawatts of battery storage supported for frequency regulation.
